Leela Aheer is a seasoned leader with a diverse background in government, small business ownership, and community development. Currently, she serves as the Senior Executive for Strategy and Partnerships at BioAro Inc., where she has been working since June 2024.


Prior to her current role, Leela was the Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism, and Status of Women for the Government of Alberta from April 2019 to July 2021. During her tenure, she played a key role in shaping cultural and social policies that promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion.


Before her ministerial position, Leela served as the Shadow Minister of Children Services from April 2018 to April 2018, Shadow Minister of Education from April 2017 to April 2018, and Shadow Minister of Energy from April 2015 to April 2017.


Her experience in these roles has equipped her with strong analytical skills, effective communication abilities, and a deep understanding of the complexities of governance.

In addition to her government experience, Leela has been a successful small business owner for over 28 years. She founded SLAM Studio of Music and Performance in September 1994, which has been dedicated to providing music education and performance opportunities to individuals of all ages. She also co-owned Westcreek Auto Wash in Chestermere, Alberta, which has been in operation since April 1996.

Throughout her career, Leela has developed a unique blend of skills that include business analysis, economics, education, music education, nonprofit organizations, singing, start-ups, successful business ownership, teaching, and analytical skills. Her passion for community development and her ability to build strong partnerships have made her an effective leader in her various roles.


Leela's impressive portfolio of experiences has prepared her to drive strategic partnerships and develop innovative solutions that address the complex challenges facing healthcare organizations today.

Leela Aheer: A Passionate Leader in Alberta's Government and Community


As a former Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism, and Status of Women in the Government of Alberta, Leela Aheer has been a driving force in shaping cultural and social policies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. With her background in music and entrepreneurship, she has brought a unique blend of creativity and business acumen to her roles.

Aheer's political career began when she was elected as the Wildrose Opposition MLA for Chestermere-RockyView in 2015. She later represented the riding of Chestermere-Strathmore from 2019 to 2023. During her time in government, she served as the Shadow Minister for several portfolios, including Energy, Education, Community and Social Services, and Status of Women.

As the Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism, and Status of Women, Aheer passed several pieces of legislation aimed at protecting women's rights and promoting cultural diversity. Some notable achievements include the passage of Clare's law, which allows victims of domestic violence to access information about their abusers' past behavior, and the Health Professions Act changes to protect women and girls from female genital mutilation.

Aheer's professional life is multifaceted. She is an entrepreneur with over 28 years of experience running her own businesses, including Westcreek Auto Wash and SLAM Studio of Music and Performance. As a professional musician and singing teacher, she has performed at numerous festivals, charity events, and cultural concerts.

Aheer's family plays a significant role in her life and career. Her children have accompanied her on door-knocking campaigns and have even performed alongside her at charity events. Her whole family has been involved in politics and public service, making it a true family affair.


Aheer's passion for community development is evident in her advocacy for technology and innovation in Alberta. She believes that the province should be a destination for investors, entrepreneurs, and creatives, particularly in the arts and culture sector. She emphasizes the importance of digital access, creative expression, and job creation in driving economic growth.

One memorable experience was meeting Kiesza at an event honoring the Chinese community in Alberta. Another highlight was meeting the cast and crew of Heartland, which had a profound impact on her youngest son who has autism.

Does Leela Aheer have a background in music or performing arts, and if so, how has she incorporated her talents into her public life?


Leela: I can sing in multiple languages, and that has opened so many doors for me into the lives of wonderful people who have taken the time to teach me important songs that express the love of their culture and their love of sharing their culture. It is a very powerful experience to learn a loved song, and even more powerful when it is performed.

Has Leela Aheer performed at any high-profile events or functions, such as charity galas or cultural festivals, and if so, what was her experience like? Yes!


Leela: Hundreds of cultural festivals, folk festivals, cultural concerts. Art exhibitions, and for charities for autism, mental health and addiction, and most importantly for the families of the people I serve!


Does Leela Aheer have a strong family support system, and if so, what role do her family members play in her life and career?


Leela: Yes-we do everything together. My kids have been door knocking and performing since they were littles!


Are there any family members or close friends who have been involved in politics or public service alongside Leela Aheer?



Leela: My whole family has been involved!


Has Leela Aheer spoken publicly about how her personal experiences or upbringing have influenced her political views or values, and if so, what are some examples of this?


Leela: I have always been influenced by my community. My mother volunteered for everything, and this influenced how I have lived my life and my desire to give back through working in my community and through public service.


Let’s share about your performing journey with your singing and song writing! Let’s talk about all the events and stars you have got to meet in your career as well the most memorable experiences!


Leela: My most recent experience was meeting Kiesza at an event honouring the Chinese community in Alberta. She sang in Mandarin and was such a beautiful and amazing human. She is a Canadian gem! I also met the cast and crew of Heartland, and my youngest son, who is obsessed with the show was so blown away meeting these wonderful folks, but what moved me the most was how lovely they all were with him. My youngest has autism, and seeing some of his real-life heroes was a game changer. He met Amber Marshall, Chris Potter, Alisha Newton and the biggest thrill was meeting Grandpa Jack-Shaun Johnston. He leapt into his arms, and Grandpa Jack embraced him so authentically! It is a beautiful memory here.

Leela: I was and continue to be an entrepreneur, volunteer, professional musician, singing teacher, performer and keynote speaker.
